Back in the Saddle

April 5, 2025

I was back in the saddle this week – the dairy saddle – when I ventured west to attend the Western Dairy Herd Conference in Reno.

As a guest of the Axiota team, I covered their speaker and helped promote the event on the Morning Ag Clips.

I am happy to report that it felt good to get back into it.  It’s dairy speak.  It’s science-based, economics, and management all wrapped up together into dairy farming.  I hadn’t forgotten!

Those years as a Doc Galton Dairy Fellow paid off. The information was emblazoned on my brain, further backed up by my time as a dairy nutritionist with Cargill and a summer internship with Monsanto.

I was able to keep up with the speakers. Their science and technology are behind the latest and greatest in helping dairy cows make more milk more efficiently. It’s still all about VFAs and amino acids, cow comfort and mastitis, the mechanics of how a leg works, and dry matter intake.

Not to mention, this week I caught up with one of my dear old besties from Cornell.  We shared the New England connection, the freshman dorm, and countless late nights discussing relationships and life back in college.

Some things will never change – we still do that, 28 years later!

Thank you, friend, for all of your encouragement over the years.

Empathy.  🙂

Here’s to an excellent Western Dairy Herd Conference and visiting another part of the country.  Snuck in a trip to Purdue and Michigan State too!

Have a great week!

With love,
Kate
