Good Morning! Happy New Year! From my family to yours 🙂

This is what I am thinking about today: Responsibility. Specifically, how it is going to carry us through the new year.

I am going to go back to New Years Day when a friend of mine brought to my attention an observation that they made. I was very calm, allowing my 16-year-old to chauffeur my 12 and 19-year-old from a New Year’s Eve party at 1 in the morning, on a very foggy New Year’s Eve night.

It was true, I was. In fact, there was no hesitation, only in the sense that I told him to be very careful when he left–but I always do that.

Here comes fall!
Tyler Ziehm is off to Purdue and doing great, I am so happy that he is there.

And now, all of us can get back into life. It seems to have been on pause all summer as we geared up for this big change.

But now, my focus turns to the big, end-of-summer event: The FAIR!

It’s been 2 years! Have we forgotten how to do it??

The kids are excited, and memories of all the work are quickly coming back to the parents.

It feels different, yet the same.

A Family Tradition...

For over 50 years, my family has been frequenting Back Lake in Pittsburg, New Hampshire. Only miles shy of the Canadian border, it is our family tradition.

It was my grandfather and his buddies who first started going up annually for a men’s fishing retreat. Over the years, it spilled into many separate annual outings that included their wives and children, their spouses, and close family friends.

And the decision is...

PURDUE!!

Guess who will be attending Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana this coming fall semester? Tyler!

What a tough decision he had, all great agricultural schools to choose from!

It came down to the major. He loved the look and feel of the Ag Systems Management program and I do believe that he is going to thrive there.

There are 2 more Ziehm’s! Where they will land, nobody knows.

I am excited to become well acquainted with West Lafayette over the next 4 years. Hello Purdue Basketball–you can bet, we will be in the bleachers for a game or 2!

I hope you all had a great weekend and are ready to get to it this Monday. I had my second Covid Shot on Sunday (yesterday)–hoping to sail through it over the next few days! We shall see 😉

Stay well everyone, and I will be back to you next week with a more substantive column!

With love, Kate

Nothing like a good work party!

My friend Kim celebrated a birthday this weekend, on the Equinox.

Celebrating wasn’t about going out and having to worry about who was going to be the driver, going to a nice restaurant, or throwing a party with cake and balloons.

Instead, celebrating was about work, Kim’s style. Boiling sap, cutting and splitting wood, and fixing a water line at her farm.

Friends and family gathered, all bringing food and beverages, my son brought his chainsaw, and together, we all came with smiles and a willingness to get stuff done for the guest of honor.

Really … it’s the only way to make big strides in a short amount of time. Gather your friends and give them a project, and it will get done.

That’s how I got my camp stained last summer, I brought a group of friends to the camp for a long weekend, and we all grabbed a brush, stain rag, and went to town! Everyone was shocked at how fast it went — it’s a big sprawling 1920’s style camp. Trim and everything — it looks fabulous. This summer, we are going to tackle screens.

Yesterday, we were able to accomplish in an afternoon what would have taken Kim weeks to do. Juggling her job, doing chores on her farm, finding people who she can pay, not to mention the cost, this can all be quite overwhelming. But many hands make light work!

How much fun it was to give of our time. We laughed and ate delicious food. I can’t imagine a better way to spend the Spring Equinox.

With the sun shining down upon us in the 50-degree air, it was heavenly, euphoric after a cold and gray winter.

Alongside the kids and my best friends, it was exactly 100% where I wanted to be, and we celebrated the birth of one of the hardest working people I know by getting it done for her!

Happy Birthday Kim! Happy Spring! It’s finally here!!! And here’s to many more work parties!

With love,
Kate

It's a great day for football!

Today it’s all about football … and the donuts that I picked up at my favorite bakery this morning.

Even though neither of the teams playing tonight is technically my team, there is a player that is still my QB. No matter what, I will follow TB12 until he retires!

And, I will always find a good donut. 🙂

Cheers to Super Bowl Sunday!! I hope that you eat well, spend time watching with those that you enjoy football with (Kim), and that the right team wins! (How’s that for not showing my bias?). 😉

And may you not curse Monday morning at staying up too late, drinking too much beer or overdosing on the party food!

With great love!

We called it dubbin’ growing up.

It meant anything from fixing the latch on a door, fishing behind the farm, hunting, or eating jelly donuts around Grammy and Grampa’s kitchen table.

Sometimes it would evolve to suckering on a spring night in the golf course brook, walking the old orchard in Webster with the dogs, or piling in the blue Peugeot, to go target practicing.

Always revolving around my grandfather, it was he and his five closest in proximity grandkids. Occasionally an uncle or father was thrown in there too, just as a token to help in the mission. Dubbin’.

We never knew what we were going to do that day, but rest assured, we always knew that we were going to be doing something, and it was probably going to be a lot of fun … in a simple sort of way.

As I recall, we never planned the day; we just followed it to see where it took us. Sometimes we got stuck in mud or rocked hard in swelling spring waters in a boat that was too small. Boy, did my father sweat bullets that day, just doing everything in his power to make sure that we made it back alive in time for cocktails. Oh, Grampa.

We didn’t have cell phones and TicTok taking up our time. Good TV programming for kids was obsolete after 9 a.m. on a weekend unless you were waiting for the Sunday night Disney movie.

Dubbin’ usually meant ending the day with dinner at my grandparent’s house. The corn chowder with Gram’s famous chocolate cake were regulars on the menu. And absolutely anything could transpire among the cousins while sitting at the round kitchen table.

Dubbin’ kind of sat at the core of things every weekend. Always waiting to see where the adventure would take us. But looking back, I think it was less about the adventure because we didn’t really care what we did, as long as we were doing it together.

I don’t think that we dub enough anymore.

With love,
Kate
