An early case of the Empty Nest… It’s springtime…fast approaching, summer. It’s the busiest time of year on a farm. Planting, mowing, chopping—I can go on and on. As the kids have gotten older, they have taken on more work at the farm during this time of year. It’s expected, and it’s welcomed. You know what they say about idle hands…the devil’s workshop. Teenagers are no exception to…
I love the smell of manure. I don’t get to smell it every day like I used to. Friday, when I was walking to the post office, I was caught off guard a bit by the familiar smell that wafted into my nasal cavity. It was like an old friend. But where was it coming from? It is not a typical smell in the village of Greenwich. It…
(From the archives-It’s been dusted off and polished up) The other day I drove by a local farm. Two of the brothers were out in front of the barn working together. One brother was on the back of a tractor, and the other brother appeared to be holding something for the project. Seeing them pulled at my heart as I thought of my boys. Were those brothers peacefully…
Dear Jakey, Watching you play basketball has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Seriously, it has. I am your biggest fan! Through primary basketball, AAU, DAGS, and Varsity. Late nights coming back from practices and weekend-long tournaments, it has been so much fun, and I wouldn’t trade that time with you for anything. Your feisty defense and serious offense—you never let up, always working hard…

I have been in a pickle this summer; Tyler Ziehm has been in a pickle too! My pickle: Too much work and not enough people to complete it. Juggling during the summer is hard. The kids are home, and everyone seems to be out playing! Without me! Yikes, not sure how I can get out of this one! But I will 🙂 Tyler Ziehm has been an…
It’s a smell that most find disgusting … but yet I find welcoming. It brings me back to many years of good times, with some challenging times. Work and play, summer and winter. It represents chewing cuds and the milking parlor. It’s fresh, line-dried sheets on the bed, and song sparrows sitting in the sumac hedge. And people who don’t raise farm animals just won’t get it ……
And they are off! It was a year late, Covid Style, but FINALLY, there was a prom, and Tyler got to celebrate with his classmates. Complete with masks and social distancing, it was an event! Most of the big day was spent making the farm bus, prom friendly. Used around the farm for carrying parts and tools out to the field crew, Tyler decided it would be great…
I had a glorious Friday! I took a drive to NH to cover the Governor’s Tree Tapping Ceremony in Temple at Connolly Brother’s Dairy Farm. Paired with a lunch date afterward with my parents, it made for such a lovely day–it was like coming out from under the cloak of a long, dark winter. I was pleasantly surprised by the address that Governor Chris Sununu gave and the…
Oh, how I loved the opening day of fishing. It meant spring and an early morning wake-up on the last Saturday of April every year. My sisters, father and I would meet W and his sons in the dark up in Boscawen at their farm. Poles in hand, our fathers would drive us up to Franklin, to wet a line just as the sun was coming up over…
